New York City-based artist Lesley Flanigan builds her own wooden speaker instruments to make music that dissects the physicality of amplification in producing electronic sound. Her feedback compositions for speaker electronics and voice are the subject of her 2009 album, "Amplifications," which merges the worlds of noise, post rock, ambient and circuit bending genres to present beautifully lush, choral-like works. Music from the album formed the basis for a series of performances across the USA, including The Stone, Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, Galapagos Art Space, Wellesley College and Crane Arts, and in June 2010, will be performed at the Sónar Festival in Barcelona.
In addition to her solo work, she is known for her collaborations with Luke DuBois, which includes their performance duo "Bioluminescence" for live voice and video. She has also performed as a guest member of the circuit constructing noise group, the Loud Objects, and continues to sings in the contemporary music scene, recently as a soprano in Tristan Perich's "Lit". Her work has been presented in numerous venues, festivals, and art spaces including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), Issue Project Room (Brooklyn), Transitio_MX ('09, Mexico City), NIME ('08 Genoa; '09 Pittsburgh), and Bent ('08 Los Angeles /New York; '09 New York). She has spoken about her work at universities and art foundations including Harvestworks, Dorkbot NYC, Art Institute of Chicago, Ringling School of Art and Design, Wellesley College and the Copenhagen School of Architecture.
